Morning all,

With our trip to Coed Y Brenin only a week away I thought it was about time I gave my bike the post Dusk til Dawn once over.

Unfortunately it would appear that D2D has not only done for a set of brake pads but it has also pushed my bottom bracket beyond the point of no return.

So before I start ordering countless bits & peices on-line does anyone have any wise words for me?

Cheers,

Duncan.

Slam, you are a life saver. Thanks for reminding me that my bike also has some severe BB issues after D2D that need sorting before CYB.

Anyway, presume you are using some kind of Hollowtech BB? Ollie swears by taking the shells apart and replacing the bearings. Not sure how techy a job that would be for you but a guide is here.

Mine's a pint, unless you want to buy me two!

Ollies method seems best for price. Xt for smoothness and ease of fitting. Be prepared to replace within months.

Or you could buy a chris king one that is supposed to last for ever.
Mine has just been written off as beyond economic repair after 18 months.

So I think I will be sell the replacement and going back to using cheep ones as a disposable item

Slam, I have used superstar components in the past and they seem to last the same as shimano, one year as much, next day delivery with hariboo bag included.

Please tell Bazza that even a Chris King BB does need the occasional greasing!

Lots of options above, Slammy. CK is fairly expensive, but they do maintain and spin well. Worked well for me. The decision could be what you feel you can spend and how often you want to swap them out. Knowing you will be putting ma-hoofsive power through it, get CK and a CK greaser and you'll be OK for ages.... Just my opinion and I'm biased.....Not to mention still bitter from missing the D2D "fun".

I only regreased it 2 ride before the one it died on, and last time I had a problem with it and sent it back I was told I had put too much grease in it. it is just not man enough for my single speed. I think epping mud a single speed and me jumping on the pedels is to much for any bottom bracket to last,
hence it nothing last any time I will be selling off the new replacement one and going back to cheep disposible one.

oh and try to be relatively sober when you try and put a shiny new BB on your bike...took me an hour this morning to undo the damage caused by my attempt to install a new Hope bb last night

In terms of quality Chris King and Hope are more than equal and I've owned a lot of Chris King and Hope parts and more recently I've opted for Hope purely because I don't have the money anymore to be able to splash the cash and buy the damm King tools.

My Hope BB is getting on for 2 years now and aI've only just had the bearings replaced this week.

Plus it's British.
