Latest Ride Reports

Another amazing day so close to Christmas and another large group with new girls Janine and Alice joining regulars Jane, Lynn, Minna, Helen, Gail, Jim, Gentle John, John K, Matt, Graham, Nick, Ian, Glen, Naveed, Jamie, Adam there were more but I failed to write down their names, so apologies if your name is not here!

Rode a few lower trails then headed up to High Beach and along the Wake Valley before heading back to Bradley’s for lunch. The Rads screeched down the road and lost their cheesy grins as soon as they saw the number of Mods in the queue.

Swapped Minna for Kathy at lunch, not a bad swap!

Six logs and fork handles, ridges Jack’s Hill and the usual trails back to HB then back to the car park. Before heading for the debrief with the Rads, who managed to reek their revenge for their lunch delays by demolishing the beige!

A few half-dayers!

Back at 5.30 a long day as the sun was shining.

Short report, long ride, someone, while we were at Bradley’s, said they would write this weeks report!

Another great day, great weather, great group, great fun, great laughs, great evening.

Dave

Perfect Indian Summer conditions were enjoyed by Kaff, Fiona, Old Sid, Pat, Omar, TT, Richie, Greg, Michael, Barry, Alan, Sam, Keith, Kean, Jeroen, Neil, new rider Jerman, Myself and after undergoing a trial separation, Minna and Slim joined us from the Mods.

Barry took on the early leading duties and as we found our way down towards The Graveyard I noticed that Alan was no longer with us. After some enquiries were made we thought that he must have headed home as nobody had seen him leave the car park. In the end this turned out to be true but he'd done it trying to help somebody out and we hadn't noticed. Sorry!

The first 45 minutes was a bit stop start as I tried to guide Alan and the late arriving Simon and James to meet us as we wound our way towards Strawberry Ponds and then down the lovely rooty descent to the stream and Sze's Bridge. We eventually picked up Simon almost on his doorstep and James caught up with us at the Drop-off. Unfortunately Alan, although heard from, was not seen again.

As the pace picked up we rode The V, Stream Logs and W then headed down through the Boggy Valley onto The Loop which we had to re-configure due to a number of fallen trees. From there we headed at a quick pace onto the extended trail down to The Rooty Staircase which as usual was full of potential for getting it wrong and was great fun.

We took the more direct climb up to Goldings Hill Pond's and then after crossing the road headed back towards the car park with Kean, who singlehandedly had all of the day's mechanicals, starting it all off by nearly ripping his rear mech off on a stump.

From the car park we rode Matt's trail all around the edge of the road back to Jacks Hill where Michael entertained us with some nice log jumping. After The Ridges we rode through the Bracken Field down to 4/5/6 logs where Old Sid, judging by the cheer that went up, had the days most popular tumble.

Next was the long downhill to Theydon Church which is a great trail that requires a bit of invention to keep on the right path, especially in the leaves. By the sounds of it Barry caused the most havoc due to his dismount in the dry stream bed which left his TV looking a bit sorry for itself and Kean's first chain break gave us a breather at the bottom.

Loads of foolishness then took place on the dash down to be at the front of the queue at the bakers with Greg side-swiping bins, bollards, bus stops and old folks on mobility scooters all the way to the front door.

We took our lunch over to the green which was very pleasant up to the point that Kaff and Pat started removing the accumulated dog's muck from their tyres and shoes. I was glad I'd finished my custard tart.

We climbed back up to cross Jack’s Hill at the entrance to The Deer Sanctuary, made our way down the lane and onto the trail past the camp site before taking on the climb back up to The Ridges and then half way through Indian Summer, where we got a call from Simon to head right and follow a new trail down to the brook where after a bit of huffing and puffing and another chain break for Kean (chain full of power links) we again made our way back to Golding’s Hill car park.

From there it was over to Wake Valley and the Double Logs before a quick loo stop at High Beach and then around the Church for a quick blast down Lippet’s which was in perfect grippy shape.

The last 10 minutes started about 20 minutes from home with a quick pace set all the way back to the car park where just before breaking out of the trees, this week’s Epping forest film crew hd set up studio. They were obviously not feeling all that adventurous as they barely made it onto the trail and to the great dissapointment of most no half-dressed females where available for review this week.

The usual debrief ensued at the SH including, beer tasting, shirt sampling, gammon cooking and beige dodging.

A very brief resume.

Out were, Kaff, Felons, Hannah (back from her world tour), Dangerous, Sam (single speeding), Old Sid, Neil, Jeroen, Neil, Richie, Ron, Tommy, Andy and Myself.

Thanks to Dangerous who once again took on main leading duties and rode us all around the lower forest for hours before we went north via Strawberry Ponds. Sam took to the one gear like a duck to water, making it up all the climbs with shocking ease.

After lunch we were joined by Ollie for a tour of the northern forest including some off-piste around Upshire Road.

Highlight of the day was Kaff's video captured dismount after our re-build of Duncan's log: see Old Sids film here www.flickr.com/photos/mbro35/6134749476/.

The SH debrief saw jerseys of all shapes, sizes and hues tried on by one and all. At least I now know what size my red, green, slanted, straight, chainringed, bike traxed, round necked, v-necked, bat winged, wizard sleeved, MTB, road, downhill jersey needs to be.

Do I want a gilet? Let's vote on it.

Those NOT hobnobbing it away in the Chilterns this week were Tommy, Simon, Richie, Neal, Michael, Chris, Helen and myself (Dangerous and Die Hard apparently)

As all the big riding chiefs were away or injured it was intriguing to observe who was going to step into the fray to lead this weeks ride. Like a man eager to be the first to die for his country Simon's hand was the first (and only) to rise. With no other candidates the fate of the group now rested on the shoulders of someone who had been psyching himself up pre-ride by listening to The War Of The Worlds audio book on his IPod.

After the small matter of Helen's tube being attended to by man mountain Tommy the ride set off through the single track towards Connaught Water. The pace was brisk mainly due to the calibre of the riders we had with us on this fine day. In recent weeks we have become spoilt with the unusually dry trails the forest is currently providing us with. It therefore came as a bit of a shock when we stumbled across a real boggy patch, there were some girl like cries of 'I've just washed my bike, I'm not riding through that' coming from Michael's direction, but we all made it over one way or another. Boggy patch safely negotiated the ride headed up the Sun Trap downhill, across the road and through the single track behind High Beach cemetery and then to convene at the High Beach BSH for a loo stop.

Number 1's and 2's over the ride resumed along the single track that runs parallel with the ENR towards Old Orleans roundabout. We encountered a little trail bashing on the way as Simons human satnav lost a few bearings.

At the roundabout power was relinquished and I took over as we headed towards the abandoned Dick Turpin road and towards Copped Hall downhill and blasted through Big Badgers tunnel under the M25 popping out at the foot of Rod Stewart's garden. From here we made our way up the gravel road to Upshire before re-crossing the M25 via the bridge where we swung a left at the farmers field (instead of heading towards the stables). Usually this downhill jaunt is a nightmare in the winter but today it was glorious as the full suss soaked up the bumps and the climb that is usually so awkward was a breeze. The bridle path from here took us across the A121 as we headed towards Big view.

Pausing briefly at the top we took the orignal (but often not used) banzai route down Big View skipping over the deep rutts and avoiding the sneeky logs that jutted out on the trail. From here we cut along the road towards the foot of high beach golf course before making everyone earn their lunch with the big climb up through the heart of high beach.

A swift detour through the graveyard single track then across the road and Bradley's (looking a lot less busy than usual considering it was peek lunchtime hours) was in sight.

After lunch 8 became 6 as Simon and Helen departed for their respective afternoon activities. The rest of us headed for a quick water refill stop at the High Beach BSH before ducking behind the wildlife centre, down the rollers and across the road to the drop off. Having all negotiated the double dip at the base of the drop off and on Tommy's suggestion we headed towards Omar's fast downhill via the bomb holes and down to the pond at Loughton Brook. We then rode the trails through area 51 where Richie left us and then up the hill towards Strawberry Ponds. A quick sprint down through the twisty trails to the car park on ENR, across the ENR and then briefly up the abonadoned road before cutting across towards the base of Sun Trap downhill before heading towards the Owl pub. This part of the ride took slighly longer than usual as Tommy and Neal were dragging their tongues as they rode past the Owl beer garden lit by the warm afternoon sun.

Having ignored the beckoning charms of the Owl pub we headed through the gate and along the West Essex Golf Course footpath towards the part of the ride Tommy had been looking forward to all day. Cutting across the golf course we took the hand numbing, arm tingling, bone shaker downhill where both Michael and I nearly didn't make the final corner before breaking out onto Berry Road.

The ride nearly at an end it seemed a waste to simply call it quits and ride to the car park missing the smoothe trails to Pole Hill which were effortless in the conditions. A final blast down the path at the side of Chingford Golf Course before crossing over to Chingford Plains car park where the day had begun.

A debrief in the usual trappings of the Station House ensued where we neglected to tell the bar staff there would be siginificantly less of us this week, fortunately we were joined by the Mods who helped make light work of the feast for thirty.

Cheers

After the success of Wednesdays night ride over the shortened Whipps run, it was decided that we’d go the whole hog and whiz our way down to Hollow Ponds taking in the fast flowing single track the route has to offer. Apart from a few stops to bring the group back together and a tablet stop for Tommy’s painful back, we made it down to Waterworks in good time and crossed the roundabout in preparation for the great run down to Snaresbrook Road.

Craig led off, followed by Simon, FBC and Glenn and it was quick, with the rear hub on Glenn’s new bike buzzing like a chainsaw through the corners, all the way down. From Snaresbrook car park we made the traditional foray into the gorse and tissues of Dogging Wood, flushing out a number of “participants”, who hurriedly dispersed to the sound of zipping fly’s.

We made a quick tea stop at Hollow Ponds and after Jeroen’s mystery puncture was repaired, continued our circuit of the pond and returned to Waterworks via the same trail.

After riding the short but steep climb off the roundabout we rode the quick downhill to the tunnel. Pat had come up with a cunning plan, and with a little support we set about putting it into motion. To be fair, having to ride past the scene of his intended carnage probably gave the game away a little, but nevertheless the dash up the steep climb to the reservoir did cause its usual mixture of success and failure, although everyone gave it a real good go.

Glenn further enhanced his day by bagging the prime job of arse pusher to all of those that didn’t quite make it to the top.

Back on the trail we headed back north, meeting up with Steve and Fiona at Oak Hill and then with Dangerous, who got more and more racy as the day progressed, leading us around Highams Park lake we made our way to Chingford Lane.

Jeroen’s front mech, which had definitely seen better days, snapped, and faced with an early retirement, he was saved by new rider Brian, who’s studied and ingenious application of a cable tie, saved the day. I love it when we overcome little disasters like this.

At Whitehall Road we left the trail at the stream crossing and with Simon leading this time, found our way onto another great bit of trail that had obviously had a lot of work done to it by somebody. You really don’t expect to discover new trails so close to base and in such a well used area. I’m sure we’d ridden some of it in the past, but it had all been linked together really well, eventually bringing us out at the crossing on Rangers Road.

Inevitably, now that we were back in familiar territory, lunch was high on most people’s priorities and we headed towards Bradley’s via Connaught Waters. A splinter group, the hungrier lot, took a few short cuts to beat the queue, whilst the rest of us really earned our lunch, riding Duncan’s Log, Black Dog and Bottle Dog Logs on our way up. There was a small Nature Watch moment at the top of the trail from The Hump while Simon filmed an adder that was basking in the sunshine.

With lunch on board, FBC departed for his Mum’s birthday party and we headed up to High Beech for a loo stop and water refill. We then made our way past the Conservation Centre to cross ENR at the Drop-off.

Bypassing the now inaccessible Camber, we made our way in towards Loughton Camp and the run that was for many, the highlight of the day. Glenn suggested the long trail that skirts the camp and ends up at the bridle near Loughton Brook, so off we went. On his super new 160mm armchair, the holes and roots were no doubt a doddle, but for the rest of us, well, what a laugh. Simon and I did try to follow him but on our one gear hardtails, it was a big mistake. The high pitched, Barry Gibb like scream, half way down was me by the way. I have no idea how I stayed on the bike as I rode through the big hole on the downhill. Behind me all I could hear was yelps, ooh’s and aah’s as Rob’s highly pumped suspension sent him airborne over every bump.

Thankfully, everyone eventually made it down in one piece and after a brush with the forest fuzz we made our way up to Strawberry Ponds for the next dash downhill to re-cross ENR at Fairmead Road.

Halfway through The Swamp we heard a cry of “technical” from behind us and while Richard’s resulting puncture was being fixed, Tommy, Ron, Richie, Sze, Duncan and I busied ourselves building a new log ride with the aid of a fallen tree. Not sure Dave and The Mods were too impressed when they came across it at speed later on!

Back together, we were then in Last Ten Minutes territory and after a quick meet up with Lynn and Mandy, there was then the build up to the mad dash back to the car park and a well deserved and fairly lengthy thirst quencher at the SH where Kaff, who is hard core, was quite rightly miffed at the “what goes on tour, stays on tour” rules being so outrageously broken. So, so, wrong.

A great ride in glorious weather. Nice to see Craig and FBC join us again, hope to see you again soon.
